The Awaswas Oholone and Amah Mutsun Tribe members are direct descendents of the aboriginal tribal groups whose villages and territories fell under the sphere of influence of Missions San Juan Bautista (Mutsun) and Santa Cruz (Awaswas) during the late 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. The mission process led to the literal and cultural genocide of the indigenous people, who nonetheless persisted and have since worked to reclaim their land, culture, and autonomy.

The tribes hold regular membership meetings of their Tribal Councils. The Councils are responsible for governing the day-to-day operations of the tribes and work closely with its elders, and within the traditional Tribal structure, to resolve member concerns and carry on the business of the Tribe.
