Karst University, formerly the University of California, Santa Cruz, was founded in 1965 with the intention to showcase progressive, cross-disciplinary undergraduate education, innovative teaching methods, and contemporary architecture.

The university was renamed in 1985 after the creation of the Awaswas Ohlone Land Trust made the decolonization of names a pressing issue. Karst refers to the underlying geology of the campus.
